Mandrake is basically compiled default for i586 systems, when RH has it for i386! We're using i686!! So the thing is Mandrake runs a bit faster cuz of that!! Plus Mandrake has the best and the most essencial software packed in its distro, if u are a home user!! So u should try Mandrake!! The latest shit is version 10, but I dont think it's still available around here!! U should try 9.2... which should be a kids play with ur machine config!! I have a Celeron 850 with 128 ram and Mandrake 9.1 gives me no trouble!! And I thinks its the way their default kernel comes, that makes the difference... and thats why Mandrake runs like magic! | ||

| p1ut0 May 11, 2004 07:16 AM PDT yup xp sux, even 2000 was better than this. well, microsoft and nokia really compete in who packs the greatest shit in the best package!! all shoshe no real thing ...... smart pants, authentication software blocking lan sharing, very much my lan story too :-((........never tried mandrake, madcap. m stuck up with red hat 7.3, tried upgrading to 9.0 but it sux so much that had to revert back to 7.3 ....... need to try mandrake but got an outdated p3-800MHz-192MB system......and kernel compiling, well, i guess i need to know some more linux internals before m game for that ..... tried once but messed up evrything, cuz there are so many services, got too much confused!!...... and smart pants i guess, madcap can help u there :-) | ||

| madcap May 11, 2004 01:48 AM PDT Good post bud!! And u kno what I love ur computer there, especially its power cord... maybe mine has a similar problemo too! U kno what else? Too many times,Windoze indicates that its a corrupted floppy and needs formatting or some shit! None of my GNU/Linux gives me any trouble (I use Fedora, Mandrake and SuSE)!! Just tells us... Windoze is one of those use and throw shits, so it thinks hardware devices are the like too! U said something about X Windows lagging behind Windoze when it comes to desktop PCs... I think X is a much more powerful thing!! And the desktop interfaces that we run on top of X (GNOME and KDE) and much better than XP... I mean if u pick up mandrake, theme wise it literally shits on xp! The only thing I feel whats keeping GNU/Linux from the desktop use is, its still not getting the proper promotion!! And if u use GNOME is does seem to run a bit slow on a 128 mb RAM system, cuz by default all the distros of GNU/Linux seem to load a lot of stuffs in the default Kernel while installation, which puts up load in the system and thus it runs a bit slow... If u trim the Kernel accordingly to fit an ideal desktop computer... trust me it runs awesome!! The thing is I suck in compiling Kernels so I could do with some help there! Need I say eleminating all unessential server shits from loading at boot time! | ||
